Stone Hinge Conceptually, "Stone Hinge" embraces the primitive while taking the format of the ubiquitous book. Constructed out of slate and wood and bound with a large piano hinge, "Stone Hinge" refers to early human efforts of writing and visual imagery. Such ancient writing and pictographs were executed on surfaces such as stone, wood, or clay. Thus I have chosen slate to echo perhaps rock or earth. Lines have been incised and gouged into the surface; other marks and shapes have been painted in oil over the slate. The right panel is intended to imply a state of being that encompasses "growth;" while the left panel evokes a state of light and/or birth----enlightenment. The front and back of the book have been left in their natural state. While flat in a closed position or standing open, the book translates as a topographical sculpture edged with text. The surprise is in the opening of the book as color, line and mark begin to tell their own story.
